V2X technology company Cohda Wireless has developed V2X-Radar, a cost-effective, 360-degree radar to complement V2X connected car systems.
Targeting early adopters and a market that is currently witnessing a low penetration rate, the radar features a 360-degree sensor capable of perceiving buildings, road signs and legacy vehicles.
Key to autonomous vehicles, the radar’s functionality is not challenged by rain, snow and fog. The product ensures visibility around corners and utilises a 3D map to also provide pinpoint positioning in urban canyons.
V2X-Radar runs on current V2X systems utilising IEEE 802.11 compliant wireless signals to share sensor information between vehicles and infrastructure. The radar uses Doppler measurements to detect vehicle speeds and utilises a single antenna for 360-degree sensing.
V2X-Radar is a software application that can be integrated with standard transmissions from any V2X system – on vehicles (V2V) or on roadside infrastructure (V2I). The product is compatible with both US and European standards and only needs to be deployed in the receiving vehicle.
Cohda Wireless CEO, Dr. Paul Gray said: “This unique and innovative solution from Cohda is standards-compliant, requiring no additional hardware in a V2X-equipped vehicle and no additional on-air messages. All it needs is our software in the receiving vehicle. V2X-Radar currently works with the NXP Roadlink chipset.”
Cohda Wireless will show case V2X-Radar at Booth A38 at the ITS World Congress in Bordeaux, France that will be held from 5-9 October 2015.
