Stolen vehicle recovery expert TRACKER has found that close to 140 vehicle models on UK roads are vulnerable to security risks associated with keyless technology.
TRACKER’s survey has found that 70% of UK car buyers are repulsed by security vulnerabilities in car key fobs and would reconsider the purchase of such technology.
Stolen vehicle tracking devices are the foremost security measure being weighed by the respondents (40%). The survey also found that 30% of motorists prefer making use of a steering wheel lock while 22% would like to make use of a clutch pedal lock to boost security. Meanwhile, 25% are weighing the installation of connection protection devices such as a steel box covering the OBD port to thwart diagnostics access.
TRACKER Police Liaison Officer Andy Barrs said: “Whilst a tracking unit won’t stop your car from being stolen by thieves in the first instance, it does significantly increase the chances of your vehicle being located and returned to you; in most instances by up to 93%. It is for this reason that ours is the only SVR product used by all the UK’s police forces.”
TRACKER’s stolen vehicle recovery systems resemble an electronic homing device and involve the installation of a covert transmitter in one of many areas in the vehicle. The systems do not make use of an aerial and are hence invisible to thieves. TRACKER’s product is capable of locating stolen vehicles even if they are concealed in a garage or shipping container.
