As automakers across the globe work on developing driverless car technology for use at the end of the decade, SMRT Services and 2getthere have formed a joint venture to commercialise 2getthere’s Automated Vehicle systems in the Asia-Pacific region.
The new Singapore-based JV, called 2getthere Asia, will market, install, operate and maintain the Automated Vehicle systems for customers in Singapore and the Asia-Pacific. The entity will put on display 2getthere’s third-generation Group Rapid Transit (GRT) vehicle capabilities in Singapore by the end of 2016.
2getthere’s vehicles can operate autonomously in demanding weather conditions by making use of artificial landmarks for navigation. A third-generation GRT vehicle can ship up to 24 passengers and can function as part of a low-cost automated transit system that can move up to 8,000 passengers per hour in any direction. 2getthere is also incorporating a mixed-use approach to traffic operations by being a part of several research programs across the globe. The JV will work on both automated and mixed-use transit projects in Singapore and the region.
Colin Lim, managing director of SMRT Services, said: “There is a growing national push to implement future mobility solutions that can meet our first and last-mile connectivity needs in Singapore. As part of the JV, SMRT Services will leverage on our experience in installation, operations and maintenance of transit systems to realise these solutions locally. The Automated Vehicles will complement our existing multi-modal transport operations to bring about seamless connectivity for commuters.”
