Google plans to bring the complete Android Auto experience to smartphones, removing the need to plug the phone into a compatible car.
The feature, as reported by The Verge and as explained by Google at its I/O conference, will come via an update to the Android Auto phone app towards the end of 2016. As a result, drivers can mount the phone on the dash and use the Android Auto app for navigation and infotainment instead of using the in-dash display. Driver distraction is also at a minimum as the on-phone UI is simplified and voice-centric.
Additionally, Google announced that it will incorporate Waze in the company's in-car infotainment platform. Waze is the single most-requested feature since the commercial launch of Android Auto in 2015. Android Auto is now shipping from 18 automotive and aftermarket head unit brands.
Though Google provides some of Waze's crowdsourced data through Google Maps, Waze is known to be much more comprehensive as it offers features like speed trap warnings and speed limit indicators. The updated software is expected to launch in the next few months. In certain cities, Waze is popular among taxi and ride-share drivers.
